Luke Ch 19 v28 – 40: The Triumphal Entry

This passage of scripture has parallels with Abraham sending out his servant to find a bride for his Son.

The disciples were sent on a specific mission, in which it is told them exactly what they are looking for to accomplish the will of God.

They find it exactly as they were told, and in that respect they had the same wonder as when the servant had no sooner stopped speaking/praying.

Akin to the bride and her family, the colt had those to whom it belonged. And the permission to take the colt was the same commission; the Lords need.

The colt had never been rode & the bride had been untouched by men.

It may seem unseemly to draw parallels but they are their. And rather than lower the reflections they ought to extend them, and magnify them. In that the Lord also needs a colt! This places a great value on all mammals and creation, the Lord places a value on all things.

I don’t know much about ‘horse whispering’ or the like, but certainly donkeys and colts are probably as stubborn to be rode as most animals.

Now what do you think the attitude of the colt was to being untied and used in the service of the Lord?

The very reference to the colt, and that it had never had anyone sit on it before indicates that perhaps this colt could have objected to being rode into Jerusalem. It may have been a very inconvenient affair for the colt! And that gets to the heart of the narrative, Jesus the Lord who had need of this colt, was bound for Calvary!!

And as the LORD had need of this colt, would the LORD of this colt, give it a commission that was not tailor made! I wonder if the bones of this colt were not the perfect seat for the Lord, who sat upon it! I can’t image that it was used afterwards for another service that it had been more prepared for.

Nor does the imagination think that the disciples struggled to untie this colt, nor did they enter into argument with the owners. It was a smooth operation, Gods presence having formed the memory of paradise lost, as the breeze of kindness weathered all their faces & inward longing. Could the Lord have need of me? Zacchaeus heard it so.

I do image that this colt had a very affectionate pat and greeting from the Lord, who needed it. I’m quite sure he whispered assuring words into its ears, as they were stroked.

What was this colts first experience of service like? Well, the ground for its feet was covered with cloaks to soften every step.

The crowd were all full of Joy, and know doubt this colt got considerable attention, of all the right kind. What an interesting commission, full of color and song, people freed from their shackles of misery. The colt was introduced and incorporated into a great swell from beyond the eye of a needle.

I expect this colt, never forgot this day. Perhaps at night on occasions, the colt would think upon a bounding bouncing belly with beard shouting ‘Blessed is the King’, as it considered the weight of glory upon its back and the ease of its light throughout that day.

The commission of the colt, bears the mandate of the gospel: ‘Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel’. Paul heard it and thought it so: ‘Lay not this sin to their charge’!

And within the colts testimony we hear the creative first Word of God, that light that is a shared light, that brings us into liberty, a light to lighten every load and everyone born, even when old.
